How it started...
Some of you already know me and have been following along on my personal Facebook Page. For those of you who don't, my name is Sonin. I live in Petaluma, Ca, and I have been busily (obsessively) making headdresses as a hobby out of my tiny house for just about 6 months now. I started making them on my bed, moved into the living room, and now do most of my building outside in my yard. This is a very messy hobby and there is nowhere to sit around here, so don't even think about coming over!
Okay. So let me think…
It all started when I impulsively bought a pair of faux antlers for a Burning Man Decompression Party in San Francisco last October (2014). I took them off of the rubber band they were attached to and glued them onto a headband (Some of you may remember the hot glue incident?) I added some silk flowers, cut the headband out of my hair, tied some ribbons on, and off I went! It was fun to make, it came together easily and looked great, and everyone at the party was like, "Oooooh, I want one!" "Where did you get that?" "OMG! You made it?!" "Do you have an Etsy store?"...."I looove it"...blah blah. It looked great! So that made me feel encouraged, and I made another, and another... and it has been like that first time every since....
In the beginning I used things I already had, special things, things that belonged to my mom and grandma; and not so special things, like metal coat hangers and old baseball caps. Friends started gifting me their weird stuff, and I bought a few things. Teaching myself how to construct these things has been challenging and rewarding. I feel proud that the things I make are both comfortable to wear and sturdy, as well as pretty. I use feathers sometimes, but not often. Most of my pieces are playa friendly. Each piece is one of a kind. I plan on duplicating some of my favorites, but right now I have too many new ideas to do too much of one thing.
I am selling some at my friend Jared's store, Funk and Flash in Sebastopol, and hope to vend at some upcoming festivals and street fairs, maybe in a couple more stores around the Bay Area. I tend to make bigger things but also enjoy making smaller fascinators, as long as they are weird.
I am loving what I do and am happy to sell most of the things I am making because, well, they take up a lot of space and I only need one, maybe two, for myself. So please feel free to check in with me anytime to see what I have here to sell or talk to me, maybe come over (see, I was kidding about the “don't come over” part) and try some stuff on. For some crazy reason, these headdresses look great on everyone! I have some friends who can vouch for that. If you are in Sebastopol, stop by Funk and Flash and see what they have in their store. I am open to doing occasional custom orders, so please feel free to ask.
Thank you so much for all of your love and support!! XOXO!!!
